Nathu La pass is a spectacular high altitude mountain pass in Sikkim on the Indo-China border. It is situated at an altitude of 14,140 feet. It is part of the ancient Silk Road trade route. Nathu La is one of the highest motorable roads in the world.
Domestic Area Permits
To visit this breathtaking destination, even domestic tourists must obtain Domestic Area Permits. Furthermore these passes can be obtained online or through registered travel agencies. Besides this, visitors must also secure vehicle permits to go to Nathu La pass. Apply for the passes at least a couple of days in advance. However the passes are valid for one day only. Preps for going to Nathula Pass
At an altitude of over 14,000 feet, you must prepare well for this trip. The high altitude can cause shortness of breath. It is important to acclimatize and pace yourself. As you approach the signboard marking Nathula Pass, you will need to climb a short but steep path to get to the viewing deck, from where you can see the gates on both the Indian and Chinese sides. Moreover the weather changes dramatically within minutes, making it absolutely essential to dress appropriately. Be sure to wear woolens and cover your ears and hands to stay warm. Additionally wear good hiking shoes for better grip and comfort. Lastly, do not forget to wear sunglasses as the glare can be quite harsh.

The Drive from Gangtok to Nathu La Pass
The distance from Gangtok to Nathu La is about 60 Kms. No writeup about Nathu La will be complete without mentioning the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) as they have constructed excellent roads through inhospitable terrain all the way up to Nathu La. Along the way take time to read the humorous road highlighting safe driving and road safety. Additionally, make sure to take a break at Kaygnosla to enjoy breakfast at quaint little wayside eateries, with a steaming cup of tea. Also, prebook your lunch so that on your drive back you get to have a traditional home cooked lunch. To reach Nathu La, you will need to hire a cab or share a jeep from Gangtok.

Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) is a stunning glacial lake at an altitude of over 12,300 Feet. It is frozen in winter and the reflections of the surrounding mountains can be seen on the lake. Take some time to enjoy a Yak ride while you are there. On your way back, visit the unique Baba Mandir, dedicated to an Indian soldier. Baba Harbajan Singh died performing his duty in harsh weather conditions in the late 1960’s. This place holds a deep emotional and spiritual connection to many people, especially those from the Armed forces.
Intrepid Travellers Take on Nathula Pass
Go for it, it is certainly worth the trouble and the effort. The trip to Nathu La will leave you with endearing memory. The drive, with majestic mountains on both sides and the lush green forests covering the slopes, is truly a treat. At places you will find layers of clouds below eye level which can be disconcerting and awe inspiring too. Remember to respect the sanctity of Nathu La and Baba Mandir. Avoid taking photographs in places where it has been expressly prohibited. Also remember mobile coverage is patchy at best.
